We Build People Power in Metro Detroit

We the People Dissent is a grassroots, non-violent movement fighting for a multiracial democracy where every one of us—in Detroit, Downriver, and across Michigan—can thrive. When extremists try to silence our communities, we rise. When threats to our rights mount, we organize. Because we the people are strongest when we show up together.

About Us

Who We Are

We are We the People Dissent, a progressive, volunteer-powered group rooted in Metro Detroit and affiliated with the Indivisible movement. We show up with courage, compassion, and consistency to protect our freedoms and expand opportunity for all.

We’re not here to watch history happen. We’re here to shape it. And we’re doing it together—neighbors, activists, parents, students, organizers, artists, and everyday people who refuse to sit on the sidelines.

Our Work

What We Do

We defend democracy and build community power through:

Strategic Mobilization

We organize marches, protests, rallies, rapid-response actions, pressure campaigns, and people-powered events that push back against extremism and uplift progressive values.

Advocacy

We meet with local, state, and federal lawmakers to advocate for policies that protect our rights, expand opportunity, and strengthen our democratic institutions. We bring community voices directly to decision-makers—and hold them accountable.

Mutual Aid

We believe democracy is strongest when we take care of one another. Our mutual aid efforts connect neighbors with resources, support local needs, and reinforce the power of solidarity on the ground.

Voter Engagement

From door-knocking in Detroit to text banks across Michigan, we help voters get the information, confidence, and support they need to cast their ballots and make their voices heard.

Civic Education

We host workshops, teach-ins, and trainings so more of us can speak up, organize effectively, and step into leadership.

Coalition Building

We work side-by-side with partner organizations across Metro Detroit and statewide to grow a unified, justice-centered movement.

Help Bring Emerxon home

On Wednesday, January 21st, 2026, in Royal Oak, a city who never entered an agreement with ICE, Emerxon was taken by the CBP. Why? Because a police officer from the RODP called CBP to turn Emerxon in. The snag? Emerxon is a legal resident, with no criminal record, and he didn’t commit any traffic violation. The police officer pulled him and his family over for an allegedly expired license plate tab. But their tag was good until April 2026. Yes, you got it: Emerxon has been racially profiled, and now he is in ICE custody, away from his wife and their child. If you can donate towards his legal fees and support his family while he is not there to provide for them, please do not hesitate. It is much needed.

On Monday 26th, 2026, during the RO city commissioners meeting, We the People Dissent standing alongside Royal Oak residents demanded that the police officer responsible for causing so much harm be suspended. As we are following up closely on this matter, please do not hesitate to join us at the next city meetings.
