Dear members of the American Resistance,
Tonight is a shorter bulletin than usual as Rev. Perez and I are in the midst of preparing for Saturday’s meeting at Central. This meeting is reserved to Faith Leaders, but please if you are ministerial staff, or you are involved with a church, or temple, mosque, synagogue, etc. and could pass the information to your leadership, then please come! We will present the Signs of Solidarity initiative and 🧡Omar🧡 from Asamblea Popular will also present Migra Watch. Feel free to share this registration link with your pastor, imam, priest, lama, etc.: https://www.mobilize.us/indivisible/event/899495/
I am sure you’ve seen the news: the “SAVE” Act passed the house. As 🧡Doug🧡 puts it: “While purportedly a voter id bill, its true aim is to block noncitizens from voting. This is nothing but the codification of White Replacement Theory into law. Michigan law already prevents noncitizens from voting, has strong voter id requirements, and provides for affidavits to attest to voter eligibility in the event that ID is not presented. Over 20 years, one noncitizen was found to have voted. That’s 1 vote in about 30 million votes cast. All the comments I see on social media cast this as common sense voter id requirements. This is a false narrative that no one should be drawn into. Call Peters, Slotkin, and you rep and tell them to take a stand. (202) 224-3121.”
Thanks to 🧡Doug🧡 for kicking off this week’s actions!
1/ Indeed, let’s call our senators to say NO to HR2.
2/ On the very same topic, the resolution opposing the Americans For Citizen Voting ballot proposal is on the agenda of the DETROIT CITY COUNCIL MEETING this Tuesday FEB 17 at 10 AM. We must sink the Americans for Citizens Voting ballot proposal, which is another lie to strip Michiganders of their voting rights. Let’s give Detroit City Council the support to pass this resolution against the voter suppression ballot proposal.
In person or online, let’s be ready to submit our public comment. Address: 1340 Coleman A. Young Municipal Center Detroit, MI 48226. Zoom for those attending online: https://detroitmi.gov/Online-CC-Meeting. Phone # for those calling in: any of the numbers below:

3/We have 1 day left to put a hell of a pressure on Slotkin and Peters to STILL NOT FUND DHS/ICE. Call twice a day for twice the fun!
We have real leverage in this fight: the funding bill can’t pass without Democratic votes. Dems must reject any bill, including another temporary funding bill that kicks the can down the road.
Then, call your representative.
And if you can’t call, click here to email them instead.
More events and actions follow, but before, I want to share an update on the Royal Oak police officer who made the poor “executive” decision to turn on a legal resident to CBP on January 21st. Last Friday, we (🧡Russ🧡, 🧡Greg🧡, 🧡Michael🧡, and I) met with Chief of Police Moore who was very civil. Although he didn’t share the name of the police officer responsible for fear of retaliation, he informed us that he drafted a directive that prohibits officers from calling ICE/CBP during a traffic stop. The directive should be finalized in a few months. This is most certainly a step forward in ensuring the safety of the Royal Oak residents and the general public in the city, but we were a little shocked to hear that the police officer didn’t face consequences for his act. Moreover, no reparation was offered for the huge harm caused to Emerxon and Emerxon’s family. Finally, the directive still allows officers to call CBP on people who would be subject to an administrative warrant (AKA an illegitimate warrant). Chief of Police Moore insisted that the officer responsible of over-zealousness was remorseful and going through hell. It is not our intention to add pain to the pain, only to ensure this type of situation never repeats itself, in Royal Oak or anywhere else. But I wouldn’t be surprised if you think, reading these lines, “and what about Emerxon? Isn’t he going through hell, a much more dangerous one?” Here is a philosophical conclusion, friends: In a society where the top instills hatred, no one wins. We are all made miserable.
Emerxon is still detained in Calhoun county. The only good news is that he is able to talk to his partner and son everyday on the phone. The bad news is that we haven’t been able to raise enough money for filling an habeas corpus yet. His court date is Feb 24th. He’s now looking at deportation and his family is considering self-deportation. Even if we are not able to meet the goal of the legal costs, please still consider dropping $10 in the bucket of our fundraiser. His family will need it for the journey to Venezuela. Thank you so much to our 14 donors! Emerxon and A. send you their love and gratitude!
Last night I was finishing Meursault, Counter-Investigation by French-Algerian author Kamel Daoud and this line caught my attention: « Des gens qui répondent à la peur de l’absurde par un excès de zèle. » It struck me as an accurate description of our law enforcement under the Trump era: “People who respond to the fear of the absurd with over-zealousness”.
